Inspired by a Book mani - The Iron Trial by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare

Confessions of a Sarcastic Mom's Inspired by a Book Manis

Every week I will bring you nail art! Thursdays used to be Fail Art Thursday, but hopefully I'll have less "fail" here! I'm going to do this series (for as long as I can), with nail art inspired by books! The covers of books specifically. I hope to be able to do this EVERY week - and I'm going to try my hardest to make this a weekly feature - there are SO many books I can utilize :)

Today's post features one of my son's books with the coolest cover! I was so excited about trying the cover of The Iron Trial by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare (You might recognize those names from The Spiderwick Chronicles and The Mortal Instruments). But what I ended up with was far worse than I could have ever imagined. What is pictured below is my 4th attempt at nail art with this cover. And it's less "I'm satisfied with this" and more "Screw this, I'm done." hahah! I've been doing this series for a while now, and I think this is the worst I've ever done.

I used A LOT of polishes. They included Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics in Pond and Grandma; Cult Nails in Awakening and Ay Poppy!; China Glaze New Birth and Five Rules (both from The Giver collection); OPI Suzi Says Feng Shui and Stranger Tides; and Wet n Wild matte top coat.

It started off well! I painted my pointer and pinky with Awakening, my middle finger with Ay Poppy! and my ring finger with Suzi Says Feng Shui.

I knew I wanted my middle and ring fingers to look like the red-orange and blue billowy smokey areas around the kids on the cover. So I started there. I dabbed Five Rules over the orange and blue nails, and then I dabbed Grandma over the orange nail and Pool over the blue nail. Those look great, I think! And then it started going downhil...

No matter what I did, what I tried, I could not get the pointer and pinky right. It all just looked like a blobbed up mess. I tried doing what looked like drips, to look like the brushstrokes downward on the cover. I think they look kind of like angel wings. Anyway, I tried to create them several different times and failed. Then I decided to do a gradient - they all failed. Awakening isn't pigmented enough for a really effective gradient. So I gave up. I tried a gradient with Five Rules and New Birth on my pinky, then put the Wet n Wild matte top coat. I then sponged Five Rules on my pointer, mattified it, and called it a day.

So what do you guys think? I am really looking forward to what I can accomplish by continuing this feature! Is there a book you'd like to see me attempt nail art inspired by? I'll gladly take suggestions! I can even get the book checked out from the library if need be ;)
